In 1979, Dodge transformed its Magnum into an anti-riot vehicle by equipping it with retractable headlight protection. It would be much more useful a year later on the St Regis, most of which would be used for police fleets.
In truth, the appeal is mainly aesthetic. It is a parade to the old habit that American manufacturers have of integrating standard-size headlight units, replacements by "sealed beam" (headlight unit + bulb assembly) becoming commonplace.
