Ferrari 512S Modulo looks like a UFO

Writer's picture: COCKPITCOCKPIT

Flat, square, we see it without knowing what it is, this Ferrari prototype prepared by the wizard Pininfarina looks more like a spaceship than a Ferrari. Indeed, at first glance nothing shows that this prototype has the ingredients of a Ferrari, but by looking closely or rather by listening carefully we realize that it is a real Ferrari to the sound of the 5L 550hp V12 of the 512BB with central engine position, this 3-foot-high machine reaches 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds.

The history of the Ferrari Modulo begins on the resistance competition tracks, at the very moment when, at the end of the 60s, the rivalry between the Italian brand and Porsche reached heights that were still complicated for the Commendatore team when the FIA modified the regulations of group 6 - models - reduction of the displacement to 3 liters.

Normally, Ferrari would compete with prototypes of 5 liters or more. Therefore, if they wanted to, they would have to give it their all: nothing more and nothing less than to manufacture at least 25 units of the car they wanted to compete with in order to be able to approve it. in races; Same strategy as Porsche with its 917. Thus was born in 1970 the Ferrari 512, of which the Scuderia only used a few units, sold mainly to private drivers.

To design this 512S Modulo, the recipe is simple, it takes as a base one of the 23 Ferrari 512 S racing cars that the Scuderia could not use all for racing or sell, to give one of its copies to the Pininfarina design office, giving it carte blanche on the concept. This concept was the first independent project of the young designer Paolo Martin, who was then working for Pininfarina, and the result is no more excessive. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, its futuristic look surprised more than one person.

However, this Ferrari owned by Pininfarina is placed in the closet in its museum. After a few exhibitions, it resurfaced in 2014 after 48 years of oblivion with a new buyer.

The one who has the chance and the honor of being the owner of the Ferrari 512S Modulo, which can be described as an identified rolling object, is none other than James Glickenhaus. The latter, to whom we owe the SCG 003C, aims to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2020 by taking advantage of the new regulations that will govern the premier category of Hypercars. A Ferrari lover, he managed to convince Pininfarina to sell it to him. Direction the USA for this unique example.

But James Glickenhaus came very close to disaster, when this car never drove on the road, it was the subject of a fire that could have extinguished this model forever.

Heureusement l'incendie métrisé, il a fallut 4 ans de restauration rigoureuse pour quelle reprend vie. Une nouvelle vie qui voit son propriétaire aux anges après l'avoir mis sur la route pour la première fois.
