The Renault Torino probably doesn't mean much to you, so it's the vehicle to talk about at car meetings to impress others. It's hard to be more exotic!
A Renault coupe designed by the Italian designer Pininfarina produced in Argentina at IKA whose name it bore until 1975 before taking the name Renault.
Produced from 1966 to 1982 in the IKA factory in Santa Isabel, Argentina.
In 1965, the company Industrias Kaiser Argentina (IKA) wanted to relaunch the Rambler model, built under license from the American AMC. It entrusted the master of Italian design with the task of designing a new car while keeping the same base: platform and mechanics. The Torino project was transformed into a new model that was officially presented on December 30, 1966 at the Buenos Aires autodrome in two versions: a very traditional four-door sedan and a coupe.
The Torino is powered by a 6-cylinder in-line engine, which develops 180 hp in its 380W “sporty” version.
The Torino saloon was the main competitor of the Ford Falcon but offered more equipment and much better comfort. The coupé version became a competitor of the FIAT 1500 coupé presented at the beginning of 1966. Both stood out from the models on the market which were more or less sporty versions such as the Chevrolet (Super Sport), the Falcon (Futura) or Valiant (GT and others) or the imported Mercedes Benz.
However, despite the enthusiasm caused by the racing successes in Argentina, sales did not take off. The last Torino left the assembly line in 1982, but that was not the end for this model because it returned to competition! Renault Argentina launched the Torino TC in 2017 with great fanfare. Argentina has two touring championships, both called TC, "Turismo Carretera".
However, a virtual tribute was paid to it through the Concept Torino 360.
