Spain: testing new markings

In Spain we are testing the red line!

It is on the Andalusian side, in the south of the country, at the A-355 motorway towards Malaga that this bright red marking has been installed. It is a wide red stripe painted in the middle of the road, and sometimes surrounded by a solid white line, which motorists can see for 4 kilometres.

This marking first of all materialises the separation between the two lanes of traffic on the road. And, like the solid white lines, this thick stripe indicates that it is forbidden to overtake on this section.

Here, it is the red colour that should make all the difference. It is supposed to attract the driver's attention and encourage them not to overtake on the line while reducing their speed in dangerous places such as urban areas and bends.

It is part of a global system aimed at harmonizing road safety at the European level (signs, parking markings, etc.).

This follows a new signage also tested in Spain called “dragon's teeth”, this new marking has a very specific objective.

It takes the form of several white triangles marked on the road, which create an optical illusion: when arriving, the driver has the impression that the road is narrowing. Believing that the lane is narrower, he automatically slows down.
