After long months of stripping and an official unveiling of the Japanese model last week, Subaru has finally shown the North American market what the Solterra will look like.
This new addition to the catalog is the Japanese brand's first fully electric vehicle. It shares its platform and most of its design cues with the new Toyota BZ4X, but adds a few signature Subaru elements, such as typical Subaru protective elements, a separate grille and Subaru emblems.
As with most new electric vehicles on the road, the Solterra features high capacity battery packs placed under the floor to improve structural rigidity and lower the center of gravity.
Since the Subaru brand is known for its advancements in all-wheel drive, the Solterra is equipped with a new system that drives the front and rear wheels with separate electric motors. And just like its branded siblings, it's armed with the X-MODE AWD control system with a new Grip Control feature, which contributes to high-speed stability on choppy surfaces.
Performance and autonomy
The Subaru Solterra powers its electric motors using a 71.4 kWh battery. The manufacturer gave it a target range of 460 to 530 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. The official range according to the EPA cycle is expected to be approximately 400 kilometers.
The Subaru Solterra is expected to hit North American dealerships later in 2022.
The Subaru Solterra will be launched in Europe by mid-2022.
